A High-Profile Profession, A Low-Cost Theft
It is a scenario that leaves many scratching their heads: a medical professional risking their reputation for a grocery run. A 46-year-old doctor found himself in hot water this October after being caught stealing food items valued at just over $200 from a supermarket in Mong Kok. The incident occurred at the popular Market Place by Jason located within the Langham Place shopping mall.
From the Clinic to the Courtroom
The case was brought before the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts today (30th) for its first hearing. The defendant, Li Xue-nan, who identified his occupation as a doctor, pleaded guilty to one count of theft. In a move that spared him a criminal conviction, Magistrate Chen Hui-min accepted a proposal to handle the case via a bind-over order. Dr. Li was ordered to sign a bond of $1,000, promising to keep the peace and be of good behavior for 12 months. Additionally, he was required to pay $1,000 in court costs.
The Details of the Heist
According to the charge sheet, the offense took place on October 25th. The stolen goods included a bottle of yogurt, two packs of bread, and tuna sashimi, with a total value of HKD 215.9. These items were the property of The Dairy Farm Company, Limited.
The court heard that around 3:00 PM on the day of the incident, the supermarket manager spotted the defendant approaching a self-checkout machine holding a pack of noodles. However, rather than paying, he turned back towards the other shelves. The manager observed him for approximately 15 minutes. Eventually, the doctor was seen taking four packs of goods from the shelves and walking out of the supermarket without making any payment. He was intercepted immediately outside, and the items were recovered. Upon police arrival and subsequent caution, he remained silent.
