Cricket fans across Nottinghamshire will be thrilled to hear the club has secured Pakistan seamer Mohammad Ali on a short-term multi-format deal for the closing stages of the 2024 season. The 33-year-old, who has earned four Test caps and represented his country in all international formats, is set to link up with Notts for the final six matches of their County Championship Division One title defence. Before stepping into red-ball action, Ali will make his Trent Bridge debut in white-ball cricket, starting with the One-Day Cup competition.
Ali’s Red-Ball Dominance Shines Through
While Ali has experience across all formats, it’s his red-ball record that truly stands out in his career. Of his 332 professional wickets, an impressive 222 have come in first-class matches, highlighting his ability to excel in longer-form cricket. This pedigree makes him a valuable addition to Nottinghamshire as they fight to hold onto their County Championship crown in the crucial late-season fixtures.
Franks Praises Ali’s Character and Past Success
Ali’s connection to Nottinghamshire goes back to the 2022-23 season, when he played under current Notts assistant coach Paul Franks at Central Punjab. Together, they guided the side to double domestic glory in Pakistan, winning both the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (the country’s top first-class title) and the 50-over championship. Franks revealed to the club website that they’d explored bringing Ali to Trent Bridge before, noting, "This one felt like it was at a really good time for him and for us."
“What really hit home for me when I coached him while in Pakistan was Mohammad’s character and personality,” Franks added. “He’s the kind of player who fits seamlessly into a team environment and brings energy every time he steps onto the field, which is exactly what we need as we push for success in the final stretch of the season.”
