Veteran Actress Kim Ji Mi Passes Away at 85: A Legacy in Korean Cinema

Veteran actress Kim Ji Mi has passed away at the age of 85, marking the end of an era in Korean cinema. According to announcements from the Federation of Korean Film Artists and the Korean Film Actors Association, Kim breathed her last on the morning of December 10 in Los Angeles, USA. A representative from the Federation shared with Edaily that, in recognition of her lifelong dedication to films and the hundreds of works she left behind, the industry plans to organize a special film industry funeral to honor her memory.

Kim made her acting debut in 1957 and remained active until the 1990s, amassing nearly 700 credits throughout her long career. Some of her most notable works include the 1972 film (title not specified), The Land (1974), and the 1966 film (title not specified). Her exceptional talent earned her widespread acclaim, as she swept major awards at ceremonies like the Baeksang Arts Awards, Blue Dragon Film Awards, Buil Film Awards, and Grand Bell Awards—solidifying her reputation as a master of her craft.

In 1985, Kim expanded her influence beyond acting by founding Jimi Film, venturing into production. Under her leadership, the company produced seven films, and she poured her energy into nurturing the growth of the Korean film industry. Her contributions were further recognized in 2010 when the Korean Filmmakers Welfare Foundation inducted her into its Hall of Fame, bestowing upon her the title "Glamorous Actress".

Her fourth and final marriage was to physician Dr. Lee Jong Gu in 1991, but they parted ways after 11 years in 2002.
